An Unexpected Story!
Our story began on a visit to Sudan, my home country.
Our story began on a visit to Sudan, my home country. People endured a trek through pretty unforgiving terrain to get to a remote spot where one woman served up this delectable lamb. Lucky for me, she shared the centuries-old recipe and techniques with me, and I was able to enjoy lamb shaya when I returned to California. Of course, I shared it with friends and family on picnics and social gatherings. Each time with rave reviews and, “Wow! You really must share this with others. That is what we set out to do!
We shared this Sudanese food in various multi-cultural events around sunny Southern California. The response was nothing short of miraculous in more ways than one! First, we developed a cult following. Because these cultural fairs are annual, our loyal band of “Lambians” sought us out at these events year after year. Second, it was clear to us that most had very limited experience with lamb. One small sample got them hooked. People trust their taste buds and remember the “awesome lamb”. For many, that little Shaya sample was their first time eating lamb! It was crystal clear to us that people would eat lamb on a daily-basis if it was cooked right and made conveniently available to them.
Truth to be told, we have no prior food industry experience. Unlike most stories of restaurant entrepreneurs, where the founders have worked in the food industry for many years before starting, we are university lecturers and technology geeks. Yes, we have some business experience overall, but none in the restaurant business. So, why did we start a restaurant you ask!
We wanted to share our love for lamb with everyone and our backyard is not big enough!
In all seriousness and all jokes aside, there is another story here. In researching the lamb industry, the story of American sheep ranchers became more important than just sharing good food.
There are over 80,000 family-owned sheep ranches in America whose livelihood is threatened because not enough lamb is finding its way the market, to you! Sustaining these small businesses and the sheep ranchers’ way of life became a primary goal for us.
We are Americans helping Americans sustain an “American Tradition”
Beyond the story, we’ve got to admit that we love lamb, and we are very passionate about it. In other words, “We are Lambians and Proud of it.”
We also understand that with this level of passion comes an equal level of expectations from our clients, an equal level of commitment on our part to taste, to quality and to transparency.
In our quest to perfect our craft and become worthy of the slogan “The Best Tasting Halal Lamb in America,” we have traveled thousands of miles into the heart Sudan to learn from the best. From that woman who grills lamb for a living, in that unforgiving part of the world, to bring you flavors that make for memorable eating experience. We strive to honor her by doing the same.
